Ripley a quaint and picturesque village in the heart of Surrey is steeped in History dating back to the 12th Century, with many old buildings and a wealth to discover. Information booklets can be found in the village cafes to help you understand more about the village and its history.

In addition to the historic buildings, it is here that the wonder drug penicillin was first developed for civilian use during the Second World War. Lord Nelson is also said to have frequented Ripley on his journey from London to Portsmouth, one of his captains is even buried at the village church. Home to some of England's finest cricketers, its local cricket club is on the village green and has been since c.1749.  It is one of the oldest crickets clubs in the world on record and still holds regular matches to this day. Ripley is also famous for being the birthplace of rock-star Eric Clapton and boasts no fewer than seven great pubs within a mile and a half radius, some of these establishments dating as far back as the 15th century.

Ripley village developed around a central crossroads and has in its Conservation Area many buildings of note. The Village Green is acknowledged to be amongst the largest in the UK.

The village has strong connections with cycling and during the sport’s first flush of popularity was considered a ‘good ride out’ for Victorian Londoners. The London 2012 cycle race came through Ripley and the annual RideLondon event passes through on the same route.

Ripley is on the route of the Fox Way and there are many local walks for along the River Wey and the Wey Navigation.

The High Street boasts award-winning coffee shops, restaurants and shops, and has historic pubs such as The Talbot Inn, a staging post on the London to Portsmouth Road with reputed connections to Lord Nelson.

Summer months see cricket matches played on the Village Green, an occurrence since 1749. Visitors and spectators are also attracted to the Ripley Event held in July, Ripley Bonfire on the last Saturday in October, the Christmas Fair on the first Sunday in December and the monthly Farmers’ Market held on the second Saturday of each month.

Ripley is also famous for being the birthplace of guitarist and Yardbird Eric Clapton.
