In line with Government advice on social distancing, our service is running at a reduced capacity and our session dates will be subject to change.

Playrangers is an exciting project which encourages children to play freely outdoors. All children are welcome to join the free sessions that are held after school in five locations around Guildford (under-8s must be accompanied by an adult).

The Playrangers are qualified and experienced play workers who run play sessions based on using the natural environment as well as child-led play.

Playranger sessions run during term-time every Tuesday, Wednesday and every other Friday. Sessions run from 3:30pm until 5:30pm.

They are a great way for children and young people to get outside, be active and make new friends. Sessions are aimed at 8 to 12 year olds, however under-8s are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Playrangers will continue to have a comprehensive cleaning regime. We ask that all participants sanitise their hands when attending the sessions.

Information for parents and carers

The Playranger Project is an open access service which means children are free to come and go as they please. This is not a childcare service. Children under 8 will be able to take part but must have parental supervision throughout the session. Please read our  Information for Parents (PDF) [458KB] for more information. All parents with children will be welcome to join in at sessions.

Children will need to wear something appropriate for the weather and expect to get dirty. Playing outside is fun and messy and is likely to lead to grass and mud coming home on children's clothing.

Playrangers believe that children can play in all weathers as long as they have appropriate clothing, and will deliver sessions in all weathers, adapting their activity to ensure the children have fun.

Please do not forget sun hats, sun cream and plenty of drinks for your children during the warm weather and gloves, scarves and hats during cold winter evenings.

We need all parents to complete a  Registration form (PDF) [358KB] on their first visit to a session.

Following initial registration, each child will be asked to provide the Playrangers with their name and age only for the register for each session.

All parents and carers with children attending will be requested provide contact and emergency details.

Benefits of play

Children will be encouraged to assess risk and learn how to take precautionary measures to keep themselves and others safe.

They may have a chance to take part in an activity not otherwise accessible to them.

Activities will enhance development of fine motor skills, hand/eye co-ordination, plus team working and communication skills.

Playranger sessions help build social interaction skills and encourage the sharing of food and equipment.

Children will experience a sense of achievement and accomplishment in learning to use a new skill, boosting confidence and self-esteem.
