Guildford Guildhall

The Guildhall is a 16th century building of great historic interest. It was formerly a courtroom and council chamber. It is still a thriving part of the local community. The ground floor is of Tudor origin. It has beautifully preserved panelling. The guildhall houses the civic plate and many rare items. The front of the building is dominated by a magnificent and iconic bracket clock made in 1683.

The Guildhall is used for civic functions and is also available to hire.

Cranleigh Cottage Hospital

Thursday 7 May

In 1446, a small cottage was built with local oak, felled by hand. In 1859, it opened as the first cottage hospital in England and a forerunner to the NHS. By 2007, it was in disrepair and forgotten by the health service. Locals are now working with funding of over £780K from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to secure a new future as a community hub. Howard Barratt will tell us more.

Guildford and the Postcard Craze

Thursday 4 June

The early years of the 20th century were the golden age of the picture postcard. Around 900 million cards were posted in 1913. Guildford traders keenly joined in with the craze. This talk by Julian Morgan looks into some of the local personalities involved, illustrated with the cards they produced.
