Consultation on Open space and Special Protection Area planning guidance

special sites for consultations

We are running consultations on two guidance documents. The documents will help decision makers assess planning applications.

What does the guidance cover?

  • open space
  • the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area

When do the consultations run?

  • from midday 8 May 2024
  • to midday 12 June 2024

What do these Supplementary Planning Documents set out?

They set out guidance on how we will apply Local Plan policies covering open space and the Special Protection Area.

The Guildford Local Plan makes sure that new residential developments:

  • provide enough well-designed open space for residents to use
  • avoid harming the nationally protected Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area

The new guidance sets out the tariffs that new residential developments need to pay. The tariffs pay for:

  • new or improved accessible, high quality and well-maintained open space for sport and recreation
  • measures that prevent visitor pressure from harming the heaths

The guidance also covers design standards for new open space where needed on-site. (generally within larger developments).
