Major town centre regeneration project breaks ground

On Friday, 9 May, St Edward officially launched the transformation of North Street, marking a key milestone in the regeneration of Guildford town centre. This ambitious project will create a thriving town centre destination, complete with vibrant public spaces, modern amenities, and a renewed sense of community designed to bring people together.
Deputy Leader and Lead Councillor for Regeneration, Councillor Tom Hunt said:
"The commencement of construction today marks a significant milestone in the transformation of Guildford's town centre. Over the past two decades there have been numerous plans, proposals and visions for this site. I'm delighted that we are now able to see some significant progress that will help to revitalise the town centre and bring a new sense of community to North Street.
"I'm particularly pleased to see that the proposed improvements to the bus station and public realm, remain at the heart of the proposals by St Edward. These upgrades, delivering 2.2 acres of new public realm, are vital in making this area not just a place to live, but a place that's well-connected, welcoming, and accessible to everyone. A great place to live, work and do business. The future of North Street starts now."
After six years of collaboration with St Edward, Surrey County Council, and key local stakeholders, the redevelopment will breathe new life into a once underused, concrete-dominated area. The scheme will introduce pedestrian friendly streets, a revamped bus station, a dedicated NHS medical centre, 477 highly sustainable new homes including 47 affordable homes, and over 2 acres of public space all designed to enhance local life.
Sustainability is at the heart of the project, with 115 new trees planted and biodiversity boosted by over 200%. By pedestrianising part of North Street, the scheme will create a safer, cleaner, greener Guildford, improving air quality by an estimated 10%.
