Remembering Srebrenica 2026

We have launched our Corporate Delivery Plan for 2026-27

Remembering Srebrenica

Srebrenica Memorial Week takes place from 4-11 July.  We join communities across the UK in remembering the victims of the genocide and reaffirm our shared commitment to challenge hatred and build a more inclusive future.

Leader of Guildford Borough Council, Cllr Julia McShane, said:

This week we remember Srebrenica. We remember the more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys who were systematically murdered in July 1995. We honour their memory, stand with survivors, and reflect on the devastating consequences of hatred and division when left unchallenged.

Remembering Srebrenica is not only about looking back. It is also a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility today, to stand against prejudice and to support one another in our communities.

I am proud that Guildford is home to people from many different backgrounds, cultures and faiths, a diversity that strengthens our borough. We all have a role to play in challenging discrimination wherever we encounter it and in ensuring everyone is treated with dignity, respect and understanding.

Together, we must continue to make Guildford a place where everyone feels safe, valued and included.

Leader of Waverley Borough Council, Cllr Paul Follows, said:

This week, we join others in remembering one of the worst atrocities in recent history and how more than 8,000 men and boys were murdered 31 years ago. We stand in solidarity with survivors and with all those whose lives were forever changed by these appalling crimes.

Srebrenica demonstrates how the politics of hatred, division and prejudice leads inexorably to the darkest chapters in human history, if we continue down that path. The memory of these tragic events places a profound responsibility on all of us, to challenge intolerance wherever we encounter it, and to ensure such horrors are never repeated.

At Waverley, our commitment to our corporate priority of 'A More Inclusive Borough' means fostering communities where everyone feels they belong. We celebrate the diversity of our borough and recognise that we all share a responsibility to promote understanding, respect and compassion.

By standing together and supporting one another, we can continue to build a borough where everyone can thrive.
