  • Please rinse all items before placing them in your recycling bin.
  • Top tip: flatten cardboard before placing it in your recycling bin.
  • Do not use black bags for your recycling as these cannot be recycled and we will be unable to empty your bin. Find out more about recycling contamination.

Additional recycling: If your recycling bin is full but you still have items to recycle, you can present these as recycling side waste as long as it is presented in an appropriate manner. Any card should be flattened and bundled and any other materials should be held in a plastic bag. (Please don't use black sacks as these won't be taken.) Please put the additional recycling next to your wheeled bin.

If you frequently have additional recycling, you can request a larger or second wheeled bin for recycling by emailing our Customer Service Team at customerservices@guildford.gov.uk.

Food waste

Green kerbside food waste caddy Silver caddie

We collect food waste every week from your green food waste container (or communal bin in some properties). This should be presented next to your wheeled bin for collection at the edge of your property by 6.30am on the scheduled collection day.

We can also supply you with a silver food waste caddy for use in your kitchen. This is for all raw and cooked food waste that has been completely removed from its packaging. Find out more about using your kitchen caddy.

If you need either a new silver caddy or green outside container please let us know by emailing the Customer Services Team customerservices@guildford.gov.uk or by collecting one from our local parish collection points.

Textiles

We collect textiles from a tied carrier bag (not a black bin bag) left next to your recycling or rubbish wheeled bin on your collection day.

We can collect any item that can fit in a carrier bag including clothes, paired shoes and slippers, belts, handbags and hats. Items presented should be clean and dry.

This should be presented next to your wheeled bin for collection at the edge of your property by 6.30am on the scheduled collection day. Items presented should be clean and dry.

Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE)

We collect WEEE from a carrier bag left next to your recycling or rubbish wheeled bin on your collection day.

We can collect any item that can fit in a carrier bag except for TVs, computer monitors or microwaves.

This should be presented next to your wheeled bin for collection at the edge of your property by 6.30am on the scheduled collection day.

Batteries

We collect batteries from a transparent plastic bag (like a sandwich bag) left on top of your recycling or rubbish wheeled bin on your collection day.

This should be presented next to your wheeled bin for collection at the edge of your property by 6.30am on the scheduled collection day.

Refuse

Black rubbish or refuse bin We collect rubbish that can't be recycled or composted from your black wheeled bin every fortnight. This is collected in the opposite week to your recycling collection. Please make sure you bag refuse before placing it in your bin to keep your bins clean. If you lose or damage your issued black wheeled bin, you will be charged for a replacement.

For more information, please contact our Customer Service Team by emailing: customerservices@guildford.gov.uk.

We can collect anything that can't be put into your green wheeled bin except:

  • Paint cans
  • Gas canisters
  • Asbestos, soil, rubble or building material
  • Garden waste

Additional refuse: Refuse side waste will not be collected.

Requesting an additional black refuse bin

Households in our borough are limited to one black refuse bin unless:

  • there are five or more people living permanently in your household (including children). In which case you may apply for one additional refuse bin.

  • or a member of your household has a medical condition which means you have a lot of non-recyclable waste. This will be assessed on a case by case basis to decide how many bins your household needs. (An extra bin cannot be given for disposing of nappies from babies or toddlers.)

If you meet either of these conditions and need an additional bin, please fill in our online Request an additional refuse bin form.

We do not limit the number of green recycling bins a household may have.

Garden waste

We collect garden waste from a brown wheeled bin every fortnight, if you subscribe to our garden waste collection scheme.

This should be presented for collection at the edge of your property by 6.30am on your scheduled collection day. For more information, please see our garden waste page.
