Members of religious communities
What you need to know
An adult living in your household is not counted for council tax if they are a member of a religious community.
A person qualifies if:
- their main occupation is prayer, contemplation, education, the relief of suffering
- they have no income or capital of their own. Other than any occupational pension from previous employment
- they are dependent on the religious community for their material needs
If a member of a religious community is not counted for council tax and they:
live with one other person who is counted for council tax you'll get 25% discount off your bill.
If all the members of your household are members of a religious community, the discount will be 50% off your bill.
How to apply
Members of religious communities can apply online for a discount from council tax.
To apply, you'll need to:
- log in to your MyGuildford account (opens new window)
- click the 'council tax and benefits' tile
- select 'continue' on the 'view other services' page
- select 'council tax' on the 'your services' page
- on your account summary page, find the list of quick links
- if you're using a computer or laptop these will be on the right-hand side of the screen
- if you're using a mobile device, click 'quick links'
- in the list of quick links find 'apply for or cancel a disregard'
- fill in the form telling us:
- the date the person(s) moved into the property or became a member of a religious community
Tell us about a change
You can tell us about a change online through your MyGuildford account.
You'll need to:
- log in to your MyGuildford account (opens new window)
- click the 'council tax and benefits' tile
- select 'continue' on the 'view other services' page
- select 'council tax' on the 'your services' page
- on your account summary page, find the list of quick links
- if you're using a computer or laptop these will be on the right-hand side of the screen
- if you're using a mobile device, click 'quick links'
- in the list of quick links find 'apply for or cancel a disregard' link.
- follow the steps on the form. We'll need to know the date of the change.
