Guildford has been officially recognised as the top town in England (outside London) for entrepreneurs to launch their businesses, according to a new study conducted by Utility Bidder. (opens new window)

The research analysed key factors including gross domestic product, business survival rates, transport links, and office efficiency ratings, to determine the most promising regions for business success across the UK. Guildford secured an impressive score of 9.14 out of 10, standing out for its easy access to London, abundance of office space, and highly educated workforce.

New research published this week shows that Guildford is the centre of economic activity in West Surrey, with the borough contributing 12.3% of Surrey's GVA and 14.5% of jobs. Key areas of employment include scientific and technical activities, manufacturing, research and education, as well as human health activities. Many innovative and high-growth activities cluster around the University of Surrey.

This week we voted to approve re-organisation proposals for local government in Surrey. Under the proposal, we are backing three new unitary councils for the county based on each area's unique economic geography. This is supported by 9 other district and borough councils.

Lead Councillor for Economic Development and Regeneration, Councillor Tom Hunt said:
"I'm delighted to hear confirmation in this study that Guildford ranks as the top town in the UK for new businesses. Small, often independent businesses are the lifeblood of our economy and contribute so much to the vision and place shaping of our borough.  In line with our corporate strategy, (opens new window), we want to be widely known for our innovative, progressive, productive, inclusive and sustainable economy. Guildford is a dynamic and economically diverse borough that plays a significant role in the economic prosperity of Surrey.  We want to ensure we continue to develop and deliver a thriving place to live, work and do business for all our businesses and residents."

The University of Surrey, in Guildford, hosts a strong cluster of innovation and research activity, particularly in fields such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, 5G connectivity, video games and space technology. The area is also home to a number of large employers as well as a thriving small and medium sized business sector, in both rural and urban areas.

A new unitary authority for West Surrey - bringing together transport, infrastructure, skills, housing and planning - will enable the new council to fully realise the growth potential of Guildford, keeping its spot as the No. 1 destination in England to start a business.
