Rising stars from Guildford and Waverley commended at Young Local Authority of the Year 2026

The programme is designed to develop communication, leadership and analytical skills among early career public sector professionals - helping nurture the next generation of local government leaders.
Their success shows the strength of our shared workforce. It also supports our priority to build a resilient and well‑managed council. By investing in early career staff and encouraging participation in development programmes, we are strengthening future leadership capability, improving organisational insight, and fostering a confident, skilled workforce.
The competition, designed to showcase emerging talent, confidence, and insight in the sector, tasks participants with delivering a series of speeches and presentations on topical issues affecting local authorities.
After impressing the judging panel with their clarity, teamwork and confidence, Liliana and Abi were awarded a Highly Commended place, marking a significant achievement both for them and for Guildford and Waverley's shared workforce.
Speaking about the result, Councillor Paul Follows, Leader of Waverley Borough Council, said:

The Young Local Authority of the Year Awards are run by the Young Programme and aim to develop communication, leadership and analytical skills among the next generation of public sector leaders.
