Apprentices or youth trainees
What you need to know
People in your household are not counted for council tax if they are an apprentice or youth trainee.
An apprentice must:
- be employed to learn a trade or profession
- be undertaking a training programme leading to a qualification
- receive no more than £195 per week
- receive a salary substantially less than is likely once you achieve the qualification
A youth trainee must:
- be over 18, but under 25
- have an individual training plan funded by:
- the Education and Skills Funding Agency, or
- the Education Funding Agency
If the apprentice or youth trainee is not counted for council tax and they:
live in a property with one other person who is counted for council tax, that person may be entitled to a discount.
